Residents at Hillcrest Care Home in Frodsham, Cheshire, have been enjoying an “egg-stra special” Easter season, filled with warmth, excitement, and the arrival of new life.

The home recently welcomed some adorable fluffy visitors, as residents gathered together to watch chicks hatch before their eyes. The experience brought smiles, laughter, and a real sense of wonder, as everyone witnessed the tiny chicks taking their very first steps into the world.

The activity has been a heartwarming way to celebrate the arrival of spring, creating moments of joy and connection among residents, staff, and visitors alike. Many residents also took part in helping to care for the chicks, sharing stories and reminiscing, making the experience even more meaningful.

Nicola Vernon, Home Manager at Hillcrest Care Home, said:
“It’s been wonderful to see the joy these little chicks have brought to our residents. Moments like these remind us how the simplest things can create such happiness and spark beautiful conversations and memories. It’s been a truly special Easter for everyone here.”

Experiences like this highlight the importance of meaningful activities in care settings, helping to promote wellbeing, connection, and a sense of purpose.

Introduction

Good nutrition is essential to wellbeing, especially in a care home setting where residents may have specific dietary needs. At Aurem Care, we recognise that nutrition and wellbeing in care homes are closely linked, which is why we prioritise balanced, nourishing meals that support residents’ health, energy, and quality of life. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of balanced meals and the role they play in enhancing resident wellbeing.

The Benefits of Balanced Nutrition in the care of older people

Balanced nutrition provides a range of benefits for older adults, from maintaining energy levels to supporting immune health. A well-rounded diet can also improve mental health, aid in managing chronic conditions, and support cognitive function, all of which contribute to a higher quality of life. Nutrition and wellbeing in care homes are pivotal for these reasons.

Personalised Meal Plans for Individual Needs

At Aurem Care, we understand that each resident has unique dietary requirements. Our chefs and care teams work together to create personalised meal plans that cater to individual health needs, and dietary restrictions, whether that’s for diabetes management, low-sodium diets, or soft foods. This personalised approach helps residents enjoy mealtimes while meeting their nutritional requirements, thereby promoting overall wellbeing in care homes.

International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)

At Aurem Care, we understand that many residents may require specialised diets to ensure safety and enjoyment during meals. Our kitchen teams are trained in the preparation and presentation of meals in line with the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI). This training ensures that residents with swallowing difficulties receive meals that are not only safe to eat but also visually appealing and nutritionally balanced. By adhering to IDDSI guidelines, we prioritise the wellbeing of all residents, providing high-quality dining experiences tailored to individual needs.

Fresh, High-Quality Ingredients

We believe that good food starts with high-quality ingredients. Our care homes prioritise fresh, locally sourced produce to ensure that meals are both nutritious and delicious. Using seasonal ingredients not only supports local suppliers but also provides residents with fresh flavours and textures that enhance their dining experience, contributing to their nutrition and wellbeing in the care home.

Creating a Positive Dining Experience

The dining experience in a care home goes beyond the food itself. At Aurem Care, we create a welcoming and enjoyable dining atmosphere where residents can socialise, relax, and look forward to mealtimes. For residents who need assistance, our staff are trained to provide support discreetly, ensuring that every resident has a dignified and enjoyable dining experience. Ensuring nutrition and wellbeing in care homes includes such positive environments.

Pro Tip:
“Socialising during meals is beneficial for mental health, and at Aurem Care, we encourage residents to join communal dining settings where they can enjoy the company of others.”

Hydration and Supplementary Nutrition

Staying hydrated is just as crucial as balanced meals. Older adults may be at a higher risk of dehydration, so our care teams actively monitor residents’ hydration and encourage fluid intake throughout the day. In cases where residents need extra nutritional support, we offer nutritious snacks and supplements to ensure their health needs are met, further addressing nutrition and wellbeing in care homes.

Engaging Residents in Meal Choices

Allowing residents to have a say in meal choices helps promote independence and satisfaction. At Aurem Care, we regularly consult with residents about their food preferences and dietary needs. This feedback helps our chefs design menus that reflect residents’ tastes while ensuring balanced nutrition, ultimately improving nutrition and overall wellbeing in care homes.

Pro Tip:
“Our care homes hold regular opportunities for residents to discuss their preferences and suggest new menu items, making them an active part of the dining experience.”

Conclusion

Nutrition and wellbeing in care homes are deeply connected, and at Aurem Care, we’re committed to providing nutritious meals that enhance residents’ health and happiness. From personalised meal plans to a positive dining atmosphere, we believe that good food is at the heart of good care. Hydration in Older Adults: Why It Matters https://aurem-care.com/hydration-in-older-adults-why-it-matters/ Fri, 11 Apr 2025 12:23:36 +0000 https://aurem-care.com/?p=3239 Hydration is a simple yet powerful part of daily care that directly impacts comfort, safety, and wellbeing. For older adults, hydration maintenance helps preserve health, prevent illness, and support independence.

Introduction

As we age, the body’s ability to conserve water decreases, and the sense of thirst becomes less noticeable. This makes older adults more vulnerable to dehydration—sometimes without realising it. In fact, studies show that 20% of older adults living in residential care in the UK are chronically dehydrated. Maintaining proper hydration in older adults is crucial for their health.

In this blog, we explore the importance of hydration in later life, how to spot the signs of dehydration, and what care homes like Aurem Care do to ensure residents stay healthy and well-hydrated every day.

Why Is Hydration So Important?

Water makes up more than half of the body and plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function. For older adults, staying hydrated supports:

  • Cognitive function
  • Digestive health
  • Joint and muscle function
  • Kidney performance
  • Regulation of body temperature

Dehydration can lead to confusion, urinary tract infections (UTIs), constipation, fatigue, and falls—all of which can seriously impact wellbeing. Ensuring proper hydration in older adults helps prevent these issues.

Pro Tip:
“If your loved one seems unusually tired or confused, check if they’ve had enough to drink—it’s one of the most common and easily missed causes.”

Why Older Adults Are More at Risk of Dehydration

There are a few key reasons why hydration needs become more complex with age:

  • Reduced thirst sensation
  • Mobility issues that limit access to drinks
  • Medication side effects like increased urination
  • Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)

Signs of Dehydration to Look Out For

Mild dehydration can escalate quickly. Key signs include:

  • Dry mouth or lips
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Dark yellow or strong-smelling urine
  • Constipation
  • Muscle cramps
  • Sudden fatigue or lethargy

How to Encourage Hydration in Older Adults

1. Offer Drinks Regularly

Don’t wait for someone to say they’re thirsty. Proper hydration in older adults can be ensured by offering drinks throughout the day and making them easily accessible.

2. Make Drinks Appealing

Try offering:

  • Flavoured waters or herbal teas
  • Diluted fruit juices
  • Cold drinks with citrus or cucumber slices
  • Warm drinks for comfort in winter

Pro Tip:
“Using brightly coloured cups can help residents with dementia or visual impairments notice and enjoy their drinks more easily.”

3. Include Water-Rich Foods

Hydration isn’t just about fluids—foods with high water content can help too:

  • Melon, oranges, strawberries
  • Soups and stews
  • Cucumber, tomatoes, courgette
  • Jelly and yoghurt

4. Monitor and Support Swallowing Issues

For residents with dysphagia, it’s important to follow IDDSI guidelines and provide thickened fluids when needed. Ensuring hydration in older adults may involve working closely with speech and language teams to make drinks safe and enjoyable.

How Aurem Care Promotes Daily Hydration

Across all of our homes, we take a proactive approach to hydration by:

  • Encouraging residents to drink little and often
  • Offering hydration stations and refreshments at all activities
  • Keeping fluid intake logs where needed
  • Using colourful, easy-grip cups and personalised drink preferences
  • Monitoring at-risk residents closely, especially during hot weather

Pro Tip:
“Get creative—hydration doesn’t have to be boring. Fruit-infused water jugs or mocktail stations can make drinking fun and sociable!”

Conclusion

Hydration is a simple yet powerful part of daily care that directly impacts comfort, safety, and wellbeing. For older adults, hydration maintenance helps preserve health, prevent illness, and support independence.

At Aurem Care, we prioritise hydration across every home, with tailored strategies and compassionate care that ensure every resident stays well. To learn more about hydration practices for older adults, contact us or visit one of our homes to see how we make hydration a priority every day.

We’re incredibly proud to share that Vanessa Chatata, our wonderful Activities Coordinator at South Haven Lodge, was recently invited to speak at the Southampton Communicare Volunteer Conference. She delivered a heartfelt and powerful message on the importance of volunteering and befriending in care homes. She highlighted the numerous benefits of volunteering in care homes.

Speaking to a room filled with passionate volunteers and community champions, Vanessa shared the home’s ongoing partnership with Communicare in Southampton. This is a local charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation through befriending and community support.

“There’s often a misconception that because our homes are staffed 24/7, our residents never feel lonely,” Vanessa explained. “But the reality is that some of our residents have little or no regular contact from family or friends. That’s where volunteers make such a meaningful difference—they bring connection, companionship and joy.”

Vanessa Shines a Spotlight on the Power of Volunteering in Care

Vanessa spoke candidly about how volunteer visits and befriending schemes have transformed the lives of residents. This is particularly true for those who are less mobile or spend much of their time in their rooms. She highlighted the importance of one-to-one engagement. She explained that for many residents, just having someone sit beside them for a chat or share a quiet moment can have a huge impact on their wellbeing through volunteering in care homes.

Her inspiring talk reflected the heart of Aurem Care’s values: Integrity, Fun, Diversity, Connecting and Committed. There was a clear call to action for people of all ages to consider how they might make a difference by giving just a little of their time.

“Volunteering isn’t just about helping others—it’s a two-way experience,” Vanessa added. “Volunteers often tell us they walk away from each visit feeling uplifted themselves.”

Why Befriending Matters in a Care Setting

Research backs this up too. According to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), volunteering can improve mental wellbeing, build confidence, and create a sense of purpose for people of all backgrounds and ages. Volunteering in care homes, therefore, is a win-win for everyone involved.

Why Befriending Matters in a Care Setting

Volunteering Opportunities at South Haven Lodge

At South Haven Lodge, we’re always looking to welcome new volunteers into our community. Opportunities include:

  • Befriending and companionship visits
  • Supporting group and one-to-one activities
  • Gardening and home environment projects
  • Assisting with day trips and outings
  • And much more!

Get Involved – We’d Love to Hear From You

If you’re looking for a way to give back, learn new skills, or simply connect with others in a meaningful way—we’d love to hear from you. Volunteering in care homes allows you to make a significant impact. Whether you’re 16 or 86, your time could brighten someone’s day in ways you can’t imagine.
